Description
An original antique aquatint in original colour with later additions. Etched by Joseph Farington, R.A. (1747-1821) and aquatinted by J.C. Stadler, for John Boydell’s ‘History of the River Thames’. Published 1st June 1795 by J. and J. Boydell.
A stunning, richly coloured depiction of the River Thames spanned by Westminster Bridge. The print is carefully balanced by the towers of Lambeth Palace in the foreground, Westminster Abbey and St. Stephen’s Hall in the middle distance and St. Paul’s Cathedral on the sky-line.
Joseph Farington usually had his drawings engraved by professionals, but in this case he etched the plates himself.
