Description

One of sixteen lithographs by Pablo Picasso from a portfolio titled “Mes Dessins D’Antibes” (My Antibes Drawings).

These fine lithographs are printed on good quality cream paper.

They were heavily influenced by The Musee Grimaldi, a 14th Century Chateau built up from a former Roman fort. The museum housed many archaeological exhibits, and acted as a temporary studio for Picasso, between September and November 1946. The ancient artefacts and a sense of classicism has a clear influence on these lithographs of his sketches. He donated all the work he had done there to the museum, stipulating that they should remain there permanently, ‘Anyone who wants to see them must come to Antibes,’ he declared.

Published in c1959 in Paris, from a series of sketches done in Antibes in 1946.
