The Great Green Maccaw
A fine art reproduction, printed and hand coloured in water colours.
The original engraving was published in The Naturalist’s Library: Ornithology vol VI Parrots by W.H Lizars, London and Edinburgh circa 1836.
Engraved by William Lizars and illustrated by Edward Lear.Edward Lear (1812-1888) was an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, and is known for his literary nonsense in poetry and prose.
At the beginning of his career, Lear worked as a natural history illustrator and ornithological artist making coloured drawings during his journeys, which he reworked later, sometimes as plates for his travel books. During this period, he created some of the most extraordinary images of birds ever made.
