Description

The Planisphere.

An antique, hand coloured map of the world by Victor Levasseur

Illustrated with decorative vignettes. Engraved by Raimond Bonheur.

At the top is a banner of zodiac signs, below this is Pandora holding a box, and behind them is Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden accompanied by a snake. Around the map are four separate figures in ovals, these represent the four seasons. Below is Jesus sitting on a thrown with a lamb to his left and a lion to the right. There are so many details to this ornate map, including Neptune, pyramids and more. The text at the bottom of the map described the 5 continents as known at the time.

Published in c1845 for the Atlas Universel Illustre.
